Scientists Drill Deep Into Greenland Ice for Global-Warming Clues

Scientists are to dig up ice dating back more than 100,000 years in an attempt to shed light on how global warming will change the world over the next century.
The ice, at the bottom of the Greenland ice sheet, was laid down at a time when temperatures were 3 top 5 degrees Celsius (5 to 9 degrees Fahrenheit) warmer than they are today.
With temperatures forecast to rise by up to 7 degrees Celsius in the next 100 years, the ice, more than 8,000 feet (2,400 meters) below the surface, is thought by researchers to hold valuable clues to how much of the ice sheet will melt.
Drilling will start in northern Greenland during the summer in an international project involving researchers from 18 countries to extract ice cores covering the Eemian interglacial stage.
The Eemian began 130,000 years ago, ending 15,000 years later, and is the most recent time in the Earth’s past when temperatures resembled those that can be expected if greenhouse gas emissions are not brought under control.

A small point but one worth mentioning. *Scientist* don’t drill holes. They study what comes out of them. People with actual working mechanical knowledge actually do the ‘work’ of drilling.
I know its a small point, but the people that do *actual* work should be given credit for it. The *scientist* in this case wouldn’t know how to start a fence post hole and probably wouldn’t know one hole from another.
At least in oil drilling there is something of real benefit that results from it. In this case it’s likely to only be more propaganda.

Let’s completely ignore the fact that temperatures were 5 degrees higher thousands of years ago. If we can collect enough data, maybe we can force society to quit driving SUVs, which are clearly the cause of the problem!!

So…..what exactly caused the increase in temps 130,000 years ago? I mean, last time I checked, the internal combustion engine was not around at that time. Come to think of it, neither were factories spewing the dreaded CO2 into the atmosphere. Weird!!
Oh wait, I know what WAS around at that time. Checking the history books confirmed that the SUN and the OCEANS were, in fact, around at that time. Maybe, just maybe, they have something to do with this whole planet getting warm thing and cooling down again thing.
I know it’s crazy and I am no scientist…but I do have some common sense and this seems to be pretty easy to figure out.

If through “evolutionary” processes the environement has changed, what gives us the right as an ‘evolved’ species to dictate that this should stop. Has any other creature tried to do this, termintes, cows etc to who we can scientifically attribute ‘greenhouse’ gases.
Perhaps according to this reasoning we should let this process continue and let an even more evolved species appear. Or perhaps the ‘fiitest should survive by restraining/dominating all of the bove “global warming deniers so that a fitter species may evolve that will suddenly put the brakes on climate change, stall the climate exactly where it is right now forever: a climate that has been evidently changing for “100,000’s” of thousands of years.

Perhaps we should continue using the coal and oil (in the Artic) so that the polar caps can melt and flood NYC, Washington, LA, London, Amsterdam, Montreal so that the earth in an evolutionary way purge itself of this pesky creature man or drive man back to the highlands.

This is a great article about real scientists trying to further our understanding of climate forces. The 5 comments following the article are truly alarming. All 5 of the respondents are repeating nonsensical statements that have been fed to them by the Perception Management teams that are working for the oil and coal companies. Fox News has been very instrumental in spreading the false information about global warming and as indicated by the 5 comments above they are being very effective. Please, I beg of you, don’t just listen to Glen Beck, Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh or any of these other ridiculous commentators and do some real research on your own.

It’s not so much about the government having too much control and money, but more about those interests using the government as a mechanism to maintain control and increase their wealth, all by writ of law! Crisis structures have been the prevailing political tool for a long time. In the very simplest terms, here’s how you do it;
1. Create the perception of a crisis
2. Proffer your own convenient solution
3. Lobby your solution into law
4. Profit by writ of law at the expense of the unaware, dumbed-down masses
5. Use your wealth to buy more power, and create the perception of another crisis.
We’re way down the road to the sort of corporatism/socialism/fascism that’s built from crisis structures. Even I’m getting bored with it.

A scientist in Western Washington (where I am)noted the warming and cooling cycles in the past, and predicts a cooling trend starting in 2010. I think it’s already started – it’s about TEN degrees below normal here in Seattle – and has been for almost a year!
I’m waiting for Al Gore to take credit when it happens, based on his “successful” CO2 reduction efforts. Like all of you, it’s easy to see there’s no truth to the global warming stuff. So how can we all get the word out that “THE EMPEROR HAS NO CLOTHES!”???

A lot of these aforementioned responses seem quite similar to what those “wacko left” conspiracy theorists used to suggest about every sort of problem within society. Theories without any sort of valid backing. The same now goes for the individuals that deny global warming. When I hear some sort of intelligent counter argument against global warming, other than something along the lines of “those idiot scientists”, that can explain the increase in temperature without man-made combustion, will I attempt to debate this issue. Until then, the amount of scientifically certified and published works continues to point to the fact that global warming is real and that human contribution to it is a serious matter.

What was the temperature of Greenland before the ice formed? What were the CO2 levels then? Perhaps warmer than future forecasts of 7 degrees. Maybe that is why there was no ice back then.

Man caused Global Warming is a popular theory. It’s too bad that it doesn’t hold water. I’m not sure how my SUV caused the warming 130,000 years ago, or how I caused the last ice age as well the many Ice age in the 1300’s.
Along that same line of thinking, scientists say that Mars is warming as well. How does Carbon Dioxide on Earth affect the temperature of Mars Mr. Gore? Maybe it it caused by the regular and cyclical changes in the heat put out by the sun.
Wait, if changes in the Sun’s output of heat warmed a planet farther from it than Earth, did mankind make the Earth warmer?

Contrary to what you may think, JBnID, scientists do the work from recon to drilling to analyzing to research to reporting and publishing. I find it offensive that you think scientists do not have “working mechanical knowledge.” Drilling into ice has nothing to do with drilling for oil. For one, they do not destroy what is being drilled into. The whole point of drilling into ice is for an ice core, not just a hole.

The Oceans give off way more CO2 than any other source. Plants need CO2 and exhale O2. We need O2 to breath and replenish the Ozone Layer. Evrything is working properly regardless of what people do and it has for as long as man has been on Earth. And let’s not forget the 31,000 scientists (9,000 Phd’s) who signed a 2007 petition stating that Al Gore used fabricated stories to promote the Global Warming hoax and noe of it is based in fact. some of them lived and worked in Anarctica and measured the ice weekly and stated that it has been increasing for the last 10 years. Don’t buy into the hoax. It wiil cost you your money and youir freedom.

Anyone who reads the Friday 3-27-09 Fox online article on the UN’s redistribution and taxation scheme, will quickly and accurately conclude that the goal with the global warming hoax is financial. The UN wants the power to redistribute wealth from the industrialized nations that have worked hard to create wealth.And give it to poor nations that through political instability are unable to feed themselves. What we have is not a lack of wealth but a lack of democratic freedoms. Giving the UN the power to tax and redistribute money will not cure global warming (which is a hoax) nor help the poor in the long run.

I recently read that Scientists who don’t put up outrageous claims rarely receive much grant money, because apparently real science isn’t exciting enough.
Dr. Craig Loehle is a real scientist who completely recreated the climate record for the past 2,000 years, just after he discovered (or remembered from third grade) that there are many other things that effect the annual growth of trees (like rain, floods, direct sunlight, and living next to a bigger tree). It was warmer around 900 A.D. than it is today. That’s a proven fact.
On another note, why are warmer global temperatures even a problem? Crops grow better. People tan better. There’s less snow, and sometimes more rain (again, great for those crops AND good for preventing droughts).
One could argue that warmer global temperatures will reduce the amount of CO and CO2 in the atmosphere because all of the trees grow better and more trees will grow, thereby increasing Earth’s ability to remove CO2 from the air.
This is one of Mark Levinn’s favorite questions to ask whining greenie weenies: What’s the number one greenhouse gas?

Its just amazing, 10 years ago they said temps would rise .5 degrees (C) over the next 100 years. Last year it was 1 to 2 degrees. Now its 7. At this rate, the liberal media will be saying that by next year the average temp will be 17 degrees higher, and with consequences for all. Unless we start driving machines that go 0-10 in 60 sec and start paying hefty taxes for fuel and anything else that comes out of the ground, or creates heat or CO2. Wait, humans do, I bet next they will advicate humans will start going the way of v8 engines.

According to http://www.coffeedrome.com/glacier.html an airplane that spent 50 years on a Greenland glacier was covered by 268 feet of ice. 1 century therefore deposits 536 feet of ice. The researchers are drilling down more than 8,000 feet. Divide 8,000 feet by 536 feet/century yields about 14.9 centuries, or approximately 1,500 years ago. Not 100,000 years. Something is wrong – it appears that the basic assumption of the ice deposit rate has not been checked against reality.

CO2 and temperature:
The troposhere is NOT warming selectively as it must for the GHG CO2 theory to work
CO2 does not now or hundreds of thousands of years in the past have a positive correlation with temperature
CO2 is a tiny portion of the atmosphere (restraining radiant energy with CO2 is like corraling cats with a chain-link fence)
Here is the desert we have as much CO2 as anyone, but little water vapor so we have a 30-40 degree temperature change every 24 hours.
CO2 fails every test of being a significant forcer of temperature.
The planet is cooling and the warmists are desperate.

If you want proof about the paucity of the “science” behing global warming, look no further than the IPCC Summary for Policymakers, in which the critical question of how much of the warming we saw in the latter half of the last century was due to CO2 emissions could only be answered by an opinion poll, rather than reference to measurements, or a scientifically reproducible procedure. I was floored when I read that.
Let me be clear. There is very good reason to beleive that the Earth warmed significantly from about 1978 to 1998. There is also good reason to believe that CO2 emissions have some net warming effect on the climate, averaged over a long period of time. There is utterly no scientific evidence, however, that quantifies the effect of CO2. All that exists is speculation in the form of computer models, where no mechanism exists to verify that the computer models accurately represent the relationship between CO2 and any climate state variable – temperature, humidity, etc.
The bottom line is that our true understanding of any real-world process can only be objectively measured by the accomplishments we make using that knowledge. We understand weather well enough to forecast three days in advance but not two weeks in advance. We understand electromagnetics well enough to build micro-circuits and gravity well enough to predict the orbits of planets in minute detail, but we don’t understand the interaction beteen these two phenomenon well enough to predict solar flares.
It’s a logical fallacy to begin on the premise of some subjectively stated level of understanding of the Earth’s climate system, and then conclude that your predictions of effect X from cause Y are therefore reliable. You have to demonstratre the the ability to reliably predict first, and that tells us how much you really do understand the climate.

The preposition that Co2 is causing anything is ridiculas – Every living thing emits Co2. Today I read someone claimed the earth is over populated – anyone see where this is going??? I recall a star trec episode involving an over populated world with automated death chambers to eliminate the individuals who were supposed to sacrafice themselves so the infrastructure of the world would not be effected in an on going war.
I think if all the politicians stopped talking, that would save the planet in more ways than one.

Scientists do the drilling…
Years ago icecore drillings were done in Iceland if my memory serves me right.
Isnt that where Glorious Gore got his hypothesis on Co2 causing warming .
I know what is happening the AGW scientist have to drill a new hole because the first two were not big enough.
The warmists say the THC is going to stop and cause Europe and the Americas to freeze up.
Then they go on to say the melt ice from Greenland will cause dramatic sea rise.
They must have mushrooms for brains, because if Europe freezes when the THC ( gulf stream )stops
then how the hell is the greenland ice sheet going to melt!!!
It gets more hillarious, they claim that global warming will increase temperatures in the antarctic by 1 degree or so and cause massive ice melt. The average temperature in the middle of the antarctic is about -70 degrees which can cause Co2 to form into dry ice and this scruffy increase is goin to melt all that ice!! more mushrooms for brains!.
But this one takes the cake in the insane house:
Alarmists say the oceans are becoming acidic because of Co2 in the air. The pH has dropped from 8.3 to 8.1. Wow. If you ever had a pool and looked after it you’d recall that 7.0 ph is neutral and as it goes down it starts to become acidic. The oceans contain gazzilions of gallons of water and to say that the increase of 100ppm of atmospheric Co2 in the last 100 years is going to cause acidification of the oceans, really you need big big mushrooms in your brains to believe this.
Water is 1000 times if not more denser that air and the earth is 70% oceans.
If there was enough Co2 in the air to do this to the oceans we would not be able to breathe we would all die from lack of oxygen.
Ever see the videos on you tube of under sea volcanoes and the blobs of Co2 floating out of the vents and in some places corals living near these vents.

Our survival as a species lies in the balance. The ICE AGE is coming. We must ACCELERATE global warming if we are to survive. The ice ages result from changes in Earth’s orbit, resulting in a change in the cross-sectional solar flux incident upon earth. Lets carry this a little further, if the planet was warming there would be more water vapor in the atmosphere. If there is more water in the atmosphere the sunlight will be reflected off the moisture.
If the sunlight is reflected then would this not create another massive planetary cooling as did some of the great volcanos in the past when they spewed tons of ash into the atmosphere, remember Krakatoa???
And in another aspect going by atomic weights on a periodioc table is not carbon heavier than oxygen and nitrogen?
And one more thought if carbon consists of 1% of the earths atmosphere amazing how 1% can control the weather on a planet??? I have some land in Florida for sale.
